The Tyrades have it in spades. A lead lady singer who lacerates songs with a voice that sounds like a circular saw going through something living. Guitarists whose leads and rhythms go in vicious circles like beheaded fighting cocks. A bassist who perches on his amp like a vulture, and a drummer who bleeds a lot. Punk rock: pure, ugly, mildly retarded, and simple. As timeless as pimples. As uncomplicated as how to put on underwear. As satisfying as knowing that squares nationwide still won’t get it.

NEBUR is the band from the former OMEGA CINCO keyboard player, and he used to make intimate music in the vein of bands such BLACK HEART PROCESSION. Now he has a great band and they rock hard in the vein of bands such as THE MELVINS OR FAITH NO MORE.

Born out of the wreckage of the REATARDS and the rubble of the short-lived CLEARS, Memphis’s LOST SOUNDS began in March 1999 in an orange 70’s kitchen with an oversized space-aged 50’s refrigerator. They were a 3-piece made up of Rich Crook on drums, Jay Reatard on synth, guitar and vocals, and Alicja Trout also on synth, guitar and vocals.
Before garage rock “broke out” into the world of MTV2, the foremost blueprint for what was to be the sound of the LOST SOUNDS was the Nuggets box set. But with a stockpile of analog keyboard previously collected for use in the new-wavy Sid barret-esque CLEARS and the Killed by Death/Bloodstains persuasion on members of the REATARDS an indescribable sound was forged. Rich, Jay and Alicja made haste and used these influences to fill a void between the both dying garage scene and suffering hardcore scene in Memphis.
Once the most hated, most bloody, and the least likely to succeed band in Memphis due to volatile personalities and uncontrollable drinking habits, the LOST SOUNDS somehow caught a few eyes in Buffalo NY. Two unsuspecting victims from Bigneck Records offered to put out an album after hearing home recordings and the first extremely limited 7″ released on a brand new punk label from Italy Solid Sex Lovie Doll, which had turned some underground punk rock n’ roll heads. The LOST SOUNDS then made MEMPHIS IS DEAD for release in 2000.
As garage grew boring and restrictive for the band members’ tastes, “the” was dropped off the front of LOST SOUNDS. Coined “BLACK-WAVE” on their second full-length release in 2001 on Empty Records, LOST SOUNDS created their own genre. “Black-Wave” is a term created out of the genres black metal and new-wave specifically to describe LOST SOUNDS. LOST SOUNDS started to appear on Memphis’s top ten bands lists, though always with a “DANGER DANGER Will Robinson” warning attached graciously for the weak at heart. The official birthplace of rock n’ roll, home of the blues was actually gonna foster out it’s weirdo child proudly to the rest of the USA. LOST SOUNDS grew an extensive new catalogue of songs and Jonas Garland was added to play bass. Songs grew more difficult, accuracy grew more important, and band members dropped the malaise of alcohol-fueled inspiration for a purer more sober and precise energy. Songs developed backwards sounding mechanical beats, orchestrated breakdowns, and themes of apocalyptic fears simultaneously with non-conformist joy that they would not be contributing to the world’s passive pathway to self-destruction. In 2002 Empty Records released RAT’S BRAINS & MICROCHIPS that covers themes like Revelations and the barcode implant (Breathing Machine) and Columbine gun-toting kids (Blackcoats/Whitefear). Radon, destruction, doom, technology, petty vanity, and Satan somehow formed a common theme of bitterness and frustration, yet is dispersed amongst rock ‘n roll guitars and Newmanoid synth sounds to create a joyful cry of life and death.
Though the line-up has changed several times throughout the 4 ½ years, the current one includes the original members Rich, Jay and Alicja, and Jonas who switches between bass and guitar. LOST SOUNDS have made three official albums, two full length releases of demos and outtakes, and several 7″s, all recorded at home by the band for a distinctive sound.
They have split up, but they keep doing good with their new projects, such as RIVER CITY TANLINES, ANGRY ANGELS, FINAL SOLUTIONS, BLACK SUNDAY, ETC

Fronted by former E-150 vocalist Italiano, the 5-piece band OMEGA CINCO play a steamroller breed of intelligent hardcore informed by the likes of HEROIN, ANGEL HAIR and THE LOCUST, with the added twist of Spanish lyrics. Originally formed in 1999, the band solidified a year later and self-released their debut EP on their own Ozono Kids label. In 2002 they released a split 10″ with NEBUR on Madrid’s Holy Cobra Society.
Their GSL 7”, “En Tu Casa O En LA Mia”, was released in early 2003. Recorded during the band’s brief trip to California in the summer of 2002, it was produced by Pete Lyman (LIVING SCIENCE FOUNDATION, SUBPOENA THE PAST) and Sonny Kay. OMEGA CINCO dissolved in October 2003 after a final split EP (under the name OMEGA CUATRO as only 4 members were present!) with Arnau and Mau’s other band, THE CHEESE. Search for LES AUS, VORTICE and their other new projects. They rule and we love them!

For those of you who don’t know, this is the real deal, Jack. Sexy and intelligent, passionate and powerful all at once, listening to the Bellrays is like getting kicked in the balls by James Brown. No shit. The Bellrays call their music “Maximum Rock & Soul,” which is as much a description of the heart that goes into their music as it is the music itself.
Taking a nod from groups as diverse as the MC5, Parliament, James Brown, Miles Davis, the Stooges, 60’s R&B, and the Who, the Bellrays have succeeded in doing what few bands can do- making visceral music that emanates straight from the soul. Imagine a bus full of Motown recording artists being steamrolled by Black Flag, and you have a pretty good idea of what the Bellrays sound like.
Formed in the Riverside California area, the band started out much closer to their R&B roots, with Lisa Kekaula’s rich pipes and Bob Vennum’s stinging guitar tones rooting the group in blues and soul. However, with the recent addition of Tony Fate on guitar and with Vennum moving over to the bass, the Bellrays have found the perfect formula for rocking out.
The BellRays recently signed with music impresario/svengali Alan McGee’s Poptones label for European distribution. Poptones released “Meet The BellRays”, a compilation of songs from the domestic releases “Let It Blast” and Grand Fury.”
The BellRays were the buzz of the 1999 SXSW festival. They have toured the country with Nashville Pussy, shared the stage with The White Stripes, The Hives, The D4, Wayne Kramer, and Rocket From the Crypt, and gained the admiration and respect in every town they play.
Visceral, savvy, and honest, the Bellrays remind one of a time long past when music was dangerous and musicians were the people you didn’t want your daughter going out with.
THE SOUL-PUNK REVOLUTION! HIGH ENERGY! FUTURE NOW!
